Office premises and other open spaces are frequently rearranged to meet changing requirements of the users. Flexible office premise cabling design practices may use multi-user telecommunications outlets (MUTOs), consolidation points (CPs), or both to accommodate frequent equipment relocation and/or reconfiguration with minimal changes to the underlying cabling subsystem.

ISO/IEC 11801-2 Edition 1.0 “Generic Cabling for Customer Premises – Part 2: Office Premises” was developed by the ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 25 (Subcommittee 25: Interconnection of Information Technology Equipment, of ISO/IEC Joint Technical Committee 1: Information Technology) and published in November, 2017.  It specifies requirements for generic cabling systems installed in premise office environments, which can comprise single or multiple buildings on a campus. This Standard is intended to be read in conjunction with ISO/IEC 11801-1. It aligns the functional element designations of office premises with ISO/IEC 11801-1 generic terminology, refers to the campus and building backbone cabling system specifications of ISO/IEC 11801-1, and refers to the channel and link specifications of ISO/IEC 11801-1.

ISO/IEC 11801-2 General Structure and Hierarchy

Generic cabling systems may contain up to three cabling subsystems. Campus backbone, building backbone, and horizontal cabling subsystems may be connected together to create a generic cabling system. Campus, building, and floor distributors (CD, BD, and FD, respectively) allow the cabling to be reconfigured to support different topologies such as bus, star and ring.

ISO/IEC 11801-2 Performance Requirements

The minimum performance of generic cabling is specified for channels, permanent links, and consolidation point (CP) links.
