IEEE Std 802.3cb™-2018 Amendment 1: Physical Layer Specifications and Management Parameters for 2.5 Gb/s and 5 Gb/s Operation over Backplane

IEEE Std 802.3cb™ “Physical Layer Specifications and Management Parameters for 2.5 Gb/s and 5 Gb/s Operation over Backplanes” was developed by the IEEE P802.3cb 2.5 Gb/s and 5 Gb/s Operation over Backplane Task Force and approved by the IEEE-SA Standards Board on September 27, 2018. It was recognized that the short reach backplane and copper cable cabling supporting rotational (e.g., Hard Disk Drives or HDDs) and solid state storage device connections will require greater than 1 Gb/s speeds. This project defines 2.5 Gb/s and 5 Gb/s Physical Layer (PHY) specifications and management parameters for operation over channels, such as backplanes and twinaxial copper cables, deployed in single rack, storage interconnect applications.

The two new PHY specifications are:

2.5GBASE-KX: 2.5 Gb/s using 2.5GBASE-X encoding over an electrical backplane

5GBASE-KX: 5 Gb/s using 5GBASE-R encoding over an electrical backplane

Goals and Objectives for 2.5GBASE-KX and 5GBASE-KX operation are:

  • Support MAC data rates of 2.5 Gb/s and 5 Gb/s
  • Support full duplex operation only
  • Preserve the 802.3 Ethernet frame format utilizing the 802.3 MAC
  • Preserve minimum and maximum Frame Size of current 802.3 standard
  • Support Auto-Negotiation (Clause 73)
  • Support optional Energy-Efficient Ethernet operation.
  • Support a BER better than or equal to 10-12 at the MAC/PLS service interface (or the frame loss ratio equivalent)
  • Define a PHY for 2.5 Gb/s operation over a printed circuit board backplane with total channel insertion loss of ≤ 11 dB at 1.5625 GHz
  • Define a PHY for 5 Gb/s operation over a printed circuit board backplane with total channel insertion loss of ≤ 16 dB at 2.578125 GHz
